Day 263 : Orm

Day 263 : Orm - One Button a Day 2020 by Gina Barrett

Day 263 : Orm

Today's button is made up of a flat knot tied with knotting cotton, stitched to a button covered in precioussss silk fabric. This fabric colour is the best I have ever achieved using madder. At the time, I really wished I had added thread to the pot! I have always struggled with madder dyeing, usually my temperature is wrong and I have little patience, but this stuff turned out such a pretty colour, despite not actually being red-red. And while it was sold to me as silk velvet, I never did a burn or other test - I paid enough for my one metre I wasn't going to be disappointed haha!

I hope that you are all having a good weekend.

Size: (longest) 35mm / 1 1⁄/2" / 56L

  1. I think I would just carry a scrap of that velvet around with me as a sort of textile worry bead! It is just fabulous!! Did you dye the cord also? It has a good soft colour that does set off the madder red. I've only tried a tiny bit of dyeing with a friend who has done quite a bit (spinster, weaver, knitter) one day when we wanted some felt colours for a scissor case. Would love to do more but I am beginning to think there will probably never be quite enough time to even try it all. There is a four harness table loom on stand in my room that has sat there unwarped for years - but I WILL weave one day!!!!! My Swedish grandmothers keep nagging me! We have had less smoke here for a few days because the wind shifted to blow from west to east but of course that blew the fires over the ridge into the high desert! And it will shift back. I don't think we can ever do enough for the firefighters from all over the world who have come to our aide - heroes every one. I see you have rain coming in at the end of the week - so it's stay dry, warm, safe and well to all. Hugs all around! C in C xxx

    1. I didn't dye the cord I'm afraid, just a lucky match. I used to do quite a lot of dyeing in my re-enactment days. Now days I opt for the eco dyeing things - mordant some cloth, wrap leaves and stuff up and bundle and tie tightly, and then steam. I like the randomness of it. I'm glad the wind has shifted for your sake, but as you say, it hasn't helped. GET THAT LOOM WARPED!! lol !
      Stay safe xxx

  2. New computer - feels odd and I can't find anyone but you! Which is good! Has Yoko changed something? I can find her Pinterest pages but not her blog place. Odd bird but does exquisite work and I'm learning from her book (slowly). Best. C in C xx
