207 : Charlie

Day 201 : Charlie - One Button a Day 2020 by Gina Barrett

Day 207 : Charlie

A chevron knot button today - I've been experimenting with different threads, and the colours I ended up using here just reminded me of Charlie Brown. haha.

To tie a turks head, you should use a thread with a fair bit of body, to hold the structure. The buttons of the past however, are usually fine silks or metallics. Of course, the metallics are great, but the silks - such a pain. So I'm experimenting with ways that just might make things easier.

Knot tying is actually relaxing, once you know how. Until that point is is damn frustrating! I've also been writing and photographing some weaving instructions today and half way through though "if someone told me to weave like this I would throw the loom across the floor!" so, suffice to say I have started over.

And how's your day been :)

Day 206 : Tiptop

Day 206 : Tiptop - One Button a Day 2020 by Gina Barrett

Day 206 : Tiptop

A combination button today. The top is a teeny zwirnknopfe using super fine lace thread - one of my trials to see how close I can get to my vintage buttons. This one actually isn't bad at all - I was quite please with it!

The domed section is made by gluing two different types of ring together, and then wrapping them in a braided cotton cord. The little button was then stitched in place - those dark stitches are the holding stitches.

In other news, I've learnt today that some of my buttons are in the current issue of Vogue. Not noted as being mine of course - buttons that I supplied for Pinsent Tailoring's awesome hand sewn hussars uniform. However, I feel totally justified in mentioning it, as the buttons are a pretty big part of the garment! Here's the link to Zack's facebook page and one of the images (hopefully!)

Day 205 : Crescent Moon

Day 205 : Crescent Moon

Today's button is another of the ones I designed for the interior designers. Not the one they chose! We've been working really hard on our next kits this week. Even managed to tie down a design for something pretty cool that we have been back and forth to for years. So, I got carried away with the testing! Very excited...

I think the pink space themed buttons are quite cute. I ended up with more ideas than I made up, so you might see a few more in the future.

This button uses cotton perle No 8 and a No 105 ring.
