Day 202 : Courage

Day 202 : Courage - One Button a Day 2020 by Gina Barrett

Day 202 : Courage

Today's button just makes me think of the Cowardly Lion from the Wizard of Oz - after they arrived at the Emerald City and his mane got a make-over! So there's the reason behind the name. :)

The centre is a flat thread woven piece, stuffed to make a ball. I am experimenting with reproducing something I've seen on antique buttons, and I think I have come up with a viable technique. It's actually the back I was looking to replicate, which of course you can't see.

The surround is a traditional passementerie loop chenille or uncut chenille stem. Most often seen today on tassels to hide the join between the neck and skirt (known as a ruff), it can also be seen on decorative buttons. It is also one of the techniques used to create hairwork flowers during the 19th century. It's all inter-related you see...

Day 201 - Crown

Day 201 : Crown - One Button a Day 2020 by Gina Barrett

Day 201 : Crown

An embroidered button for today - with extra arty elements! I've added beads and used distress inks around the edge. Certainly not one to be washed, as I haven't used the correct ink for that.

I hope everyone has had a nice weekend. I still can't quite believe we are over the 200 mark in the year.

I've used DMC stranded cotton, a little bit of cotton prele No 12 around the edge, and beads from my stash.

Day 200 : Flor

Day 200 : Flor

More crochet today! This time though just a little flower that I've added a little bit of embroidery too, and then stitched it to a fabric covered button.

It is a nice way to add a lacy detail to a button. And it isn't just something that you have crocheted - it is always worth remembering that any little piece of lace can be added to a plain cloth button. It is a really easy way to make buttons.

I've used cotton perle No 12 for the crochet and embroidery.
